But me, I'm still on the road Headin' for another joint We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.
Album version
All guitars are in standard tuning. Dylan plays uncapoed, with A major keys. The guitar in the left channel (Kevin Odegard) plays with a capo at the 2nd fret and with G major keys, and the one in the right (Chris Weber, on his 12-string Guild) is capoed way up on the 7th fret and with D major type chords. This incidentally means that already by this second version of the song, we have all the chord families represented that will be used throughout the song’s later history.
The right-channel guitar uses the chords D xx0775 and C xx0780 and the following figurations (and numerous more):

I remember stayin' in the north woords Living in a vagabond hotel One day there in the pouring rain I could feel how the ax just fell. She lit a burner on the stove, wearin' a dress made up of stars and stripes "I thought you'd never say hello," she said "You know you look like you could be the silent type." She was married when they first met, to a man four times her age. He left her penniless, in the state of regret, it was time to bust out of the cage. They drove that car as far as they could, abandoned it out west. splitting up on a dark, sad night, both agreeing that it was best. And she turned around to look at him as he was walking away. She said I wish I could tell you all the things that I never learned how to say. He said thats alright babe I love you too, but we were tangled up in blue. He had a steady job and a pretty face, and everything seemed to fit. One day he could just feel the waste, he put it all down and split. And he headed down to New Orleans, where they treated him like a boy. He nearly went mad in Baton Rouge, he nearly drowned in Delacroix. And all the time he was alone, the past was close behind. he had one too many lovers then, and none of them were too refined, all except for you, but you were tangled up in blue. She was working in the blinding light, and I stopped in for a drink. I just kept looking at her face so white, I didn't know what to think. Later on as the crowd thinned out, I was getting ready to leave. She was standing there, beside my chair, saying "What's that you got up your sleeve?" I said "nothing baby, and thats for sure" She leaned down into my face. I could feel the heat and the pulse of her as she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, Tangled up in blue. I lived with them on Montague street in a basement down the stairs. There was snow all winter and no heat, revolution was in the air. Then one day all his slaves ran free, and something inside of him died. The only thing I could do was be me, and get on that train and ride. And when it all came crashing down, I was already south. I didn't know whether the world was flat or round, I had the worst taste in my mouth, that I ever knew, Tangled up in blue. Now I'm going back again, maybe tomorrow, maybe next year. I've got to find someone among the women and men whose destiny is unclear. Some are ministers of illusion, some are masters of the trade. All under strong delusion, all of their beds unmade. Me I'm heading toward the sun, trying to stay out of the joints. We always did love the very same one. We just saw her from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.

The Breakneck Version (1994–1995)
In 1994 and 1995, “Tangled up in Blue” was played at breakneck speed, with some intricate playing on JJ Jackson’s part, and in nice tandem with Bucky Baxter. Probably a mix of first position and fifth position chords are used, i.e.:

The rest of the song is played more or less as the album version, with two minor differences: in 1994 there is a hint of C#m instead of E at the beginning of the second part of the verse:
C#m7 F#m A D And he was standin' on the side of the road Rain fallin' on his shoes Heading out for the East Coast Lord knows he paid some dues
and in 1995, the E is back, and it is stretched out half a bar longer than usual:
E . . F#m | A . . D | And he was standin' on the side of the road, Rain fallin' on his shoes Heading out for the East Coast Lord knows he paid some dues
The “Larry” Version (1997–2007)
Since Larry Campbell joined the band in 1997, Tangled has been played as an acoustic song, with Larry playing the intro below. Larry’s guitar is played with a capo on the 2nd fret, Bob’s guitar is uncapoed. The chords are more or less those of the Blood on the Tracks version above.

Early 2017 version
Transcribed according to the Nottingham show (5 May 2017). The main difference is that the “Try with a little help from my friends” motif runs unchangingly through most of the verse.

Late 2017 version
Transcribed from the Christchurch show (28 Aug 2018), the last ever performance before the Covid pandemic.
This is the first reinterpretation where it is highly ambiguous what key the song actually goes in. There has never been any doubt that C is the keynote in the C-Bb alternation, but this time, it actually works as a prolonged preparation for F, which enters as the real keynote. The ending of the verses on Gm is ambiguous, but serves to reinforce the black key character, thus also draws the key towards F. However, the song ends in Gm, even with a shift to G major, which in the end means that this is perhaps the actual keynote. Complicated stuff.
A jazz/boogie kind of riff runs through the whole song.

Mondo scripto and other textual variants
In 2018, the Halcyon Gallery exhibited a series of Dylan’s own handwritten lyrics. Below is a transcription of the song from that collection. There have also been other sets of new lyrics here and there during the 2000s.
Early one morning the sun was shining, And he was laying in bed, wondering if she'd changed at all If her hair was still red. Her folks they said their lives together sure was going to be rough, They never did like Mama's homemade dress Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough. He was standing on the side of the road Rain falling on his shoes, Heading out for the East Coast radio blasting the news, coming through, Tangled up in blue. She was married when they first met, Soon to be divorced. He helped her out of a jam, I guess, he let the law take its course. And they drove that car as far as they could and abandoned it out West. Left it there by the side of the road, Somewhere in the wilderness. And she turned around to look at him as he was walking away, Saying over her shoulder We're gonna meet again someday, stepping on the avenue, Tangled up in blue. I was working in the Great North Woods Where the treetops touched the sky, the days were short, the nights were long and the mornings passed me by. Then I drifted down to New Orleans, something was happening there, by the time I got to town, everyone'd gone somewhere, And all the while I was alone The past was close behind, following me like a shadow that I couldn't get out of my mind, sticking like glue Tangled up in blue. She was workin' at the Moonlight lounge where men put money in her hand. *) There's always been a certain truth about money that I never did understand. You put things to bed and you call it a day, sometimes you go along for the ride, your rack your brains and you bury the hatchet, then you walk on the wild side, nothing you can do, when you're tangled up in blue. She lit a burner on the stove and swept away the dust, you look like someone I used to know, she said, someone I used to trust. Then she opened up a book of poems And she said just so you'll know Memorize these lines and remember these rhymes when you're out there walking to and fro. And every one of those words rang true And glowed like burning coal Pouring off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you, Tangled up in blue. I lived with them on State Street above the candy store. I tried my best but I never did make it up to the top floor. I could see the world for what it was, living from hand to mouth. My eyes could see for a thousand miles, my window was facing the South, Sometimes I think that I'd been better off if I'd never laid eyes on her. Love grows cold and faces get old, nothing stays for sure, you too might be tangled up in blue. Now I'm going back again, got to get to them somehow Yesterday is dead and gone, tomorrow might as well be now Some of 'em went up the mountain, Some of 'em down in the ground, Some of their names written in flames Some of 'em they just left town Me, I'm still on the road, trying to stay out of the joint We always did feel the same, depending on your point of view Tangled up in blue.
*) She was working in the Tropicana, I stopped in for a beer I just kept... told her I was going to Atlanta, and she said: "I can stay right here." (Herning, 2007)
